September-December 1967 Jefferson Airplane Performance List (Airplane VII)
As a result of my research into other areas of Rock Prosopography, I have ended up with a fairly detailed list of Jefferson Airplane performances from 1965-69. Since I have no other plans for it, I am posting it here. This list leans heavily on the posted Jefferson Airpane set lists document by Scott Abbott, as well as information from Jeff Tamarkin’s fine book Got A Revolution, but it includes considerably more shows. Please forward any changes, updates, advice or criticism.
The previous installments listed known shows from Jefferson Airplane’s formation through 1965 and 1966. The first post in the sequence is here. This post covers known shows from September through December 1967.
September 1, 1967 Community Concourse, San Diego
Jefferson Airplane/Marsha and The Esquires
September 2, 1967 [Civic Auditorium?], Bakersfield, CA
Jefferson Airplane
The Airplane chartered a plane so they can fly back to San Francisco and catch Cream at the Fillmore.
September 15, 1967 Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood

“Bill Graham Presents the San Francisco Scene in Los Angeles”
September 23, 1967 Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, WA

September 28, 1967 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco
September 29-30, 1967 Winterland, San Francisco

October 7, 1967 Earl Warren Showgrounds, County Fairgrounds, Santa Barbara

October 11, 1967 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco

October 12, 1967 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco

Jefferson Airplane/Nitty Gritty Dirt Band/Strawberry Alarm Clock/Hour Glass/Spirit/Sunshine Company/Hamilton Streetcar/Breed
1st Annual Sacramento Pop Music Festival
October 19, 1967 Warfield Theater, San Francisco
Jefferson Airplane
Although probably a movie theater at the time (and occasional used for stage shows), this venue at 982 Market Street would become a well-known San Francisco concert venue starting around 1979, and with some remodeling it remains so today. I do not know who the promoter was.
October 20, 1967 [venue], Hunter’s College, New York, NY
Jefferson Airplane/The Paupers
The Paupers may have canceled.
October 21, 1967 Penn Theater, Pittsburgh, PA
Jefferson Airplane/The Paupers
October 29, 1967 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco
Jefferson Airplane/Mother Earth/Mad River/The Committee
This was a Proposition P Benefit, not a Bill Graham Presents show.
November 7-8, 1967 Family Dog, Denver, CO
Jefferson Airplane/The Other Half
December 2, 1967 Back Bay Theater, Boston, MA
Jefferson Airplane
It is likely that as the Airplane began to tour nationally, there were a lot of shows that remain undocumented.
>December, 1967. RCA Records releases the third Jefferson Airplane album, After Bathing At Baxter’s (LPM-1511, LSP-1511). It will reach #17 on the album charts.

Another date
ReplyDeleteOctober 31, 1967 Terrace Ballroom, Salt Lake City, UT Jefferson Airplane
Based on a poster advertised on eBay, another date
ReplyDeleteDecember 8, 1967 Civic Center, Charleston, WV
the poster says "New Charleston Civic Center," and I am assuming that it is in West Virginia (the city built a new CC in 1960) rather than South Carolina. As always with hitherto unseen posters, there is a certain amount of speculation.
I was there--it was definitely Charleston WV--and it was a fabulous show!
DeleteSeptember 16, 1967 apparently featured a free concert in Griffith Park with the Grateful Dead. The Dead may have played Las Vegas that night (at the Convention Center Rotunda), and I would not rule out the Airplane's presence at that show.
ReplyDeleteThe free concert 67-09-16 with the Dead was at Elysian Park, LA. It is proved by Grace's announcement during the 67-09-15 concert and by pictures -- one of these even making it up to the cover of an album:

ReplyDeleteNovember 4-6, 1967: Village Theatre, New York City, NY (cancelled)
ReplyDeleteNovember 5, 1967: Gym, SUNY, Stony Brook, Long Island, NY with Kaleidoscope (two shows)
ReplyDeletethank you_ was looking for that! :)
Delete10/20/67 - Hunter College - the Paupers DID NOT cancel. They did, however, blow the Airplane off the stage. I ran out and bought their album Magic People the next day. Maybe the Airplane wished they had cancelled.
ReplyDeleteHad the same experience as prcrstn8 at the 10/27/67 show in Pittsburgh. The Paupers blew the Airplane out of the building and I went in search of "Magic People" the next day.
ReplyDeleteWith the death of Paul Kanter I am flashing back to my first rock concert. It was the Airplane, July 29, 1967. I was 10 years old. Yes, 10. My father owned the #1 AM station in Colorado Springs and got me tickets. Grace was my idol then. I stayed after the show and ended up onstage (I didn't look 10, could pass for 18). They didn't have roadies then and were putting their gear away. Got all their autographs except Grace's. She had left already. Still have the program (show was at the
ReplyDeleteInternational Center at the Broadmoor Hotel).
Thanks for the details. Must have been awfully fun.
DeleteAt the Washington Hilton with the doors? Perhaps 11/26/1967
