COLOUR ME POP - BBC2 1968-1969

Colour Me Pop was a late night show broadcast after 10:30 on BBC2 in 1968 and 1969 (on Fridays until the end of August 1968 then on Saturdays). Initially it was a effectively an adjunct to contemporary discussion programme Late Night Line Up which featured a slot for folk, pop and rock acts on a weekly basis, and provided a monthly best of the bunch summary.

Most weeks a singles act would perform a 25 minute set broadcast without a break. Occasionally there would be more than one act and occasionally outside broadcasts would be aired. The most notable of these were the three broadcasts put out in November 1968 featuring the recordings taken from Olympop! - A Benefit for the British Olympic Appeal Fund held at Fairfield Halls in Croydon on September 29, the same year. The first showcased Eclection with the wonderful voice of soon to depart Kerrilee Male, Spooky Tooth and Jethro Tull. Two weeks later we saw a performance from The Nice and a week later The Alan Price Set and Julie Driscoll Brian Auger & The Trinity.
Unfortunately, many of the original recordings have now been lost.

  1. It's too bad many of the original recordings have been lost--bulk erased, no doubt, so that Yes, Minister or something could be recorded--because there were so many great groups who played.

Well, great groups if you were me, anyway.

    1. It would be neat to uncover clips of many of these - the likes of The Art Movement and Eclection remain under-rated.

  3. Enjoyed the post! Always nice to hear of a forgotten TV show that featured good music. I found clips of Colour Me Pop on Youtube, mainly popular episodes with The Small Faces and Mothers of Invention. I particularly liked this clip with the Small Faces
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jYgctXpajs), it shows the opening cartoon graphics for the show. Very 60s!

  4. I wrote some songs for The Sons of Champlin back around 1965-68. I was under contract to Frank Weber (Kingston Trio) They did not record any of my tunes. But they did listen to them. Also My band at the time was Andrew Hallidie. We opened for the Velvet Underground at the Matrix in November of 1969. Also we played with the Doobie Brothers in December 1969 at the Fillmore West. I now live in New York city, and am still playing around town and my new songs are on Youtube. and Pandora, Spotify etc. thanks
