The two were Roderick A. Fraser, 80, and his son-in-law, Suheil Salloum, 32, both of Orange. Fraser, the pilot and owner of the Don Jose restaurant chain, apparently was en route from Las Vegas to Orange County at the time. Fraser's twin-engine Cessna was flying westbound when it pulled out of a bank and plowed straight into the east side of the auditorium about 4:40 p.m., according to witnesses, ripping a 30 by 40-foot hole In the upper wall.

The passenger, Suheil Salloum, was the son of close family friends to my parents in Beirut and I knew him well when I lived in Beirut 1963-1965. In 1974 I arranged his student F1 Visa and brought him to Houston where he studied for a couple of years and we became very close friends. He then moved to California and married the daughter of Roderick Fraser. In late 1980 he came to my wedding in Houston and that was the last time I saw him.

The history of all the bands that played at the Swing is incredible, I feel a connection that is hard to describe

Imad F Abdullah, Architect AIA, Houston
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12399738395165156651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6667800298422570910.post-88514168170265298802021-09-25T11:05:29.315-07:002021-09-25T11:05:29.315-07:00Thanks for the details--Dec 6 68 was the next-to-l...Thanks for the details--Dec 6 68 was the next-to-last performance of the "psychedelic" Eric Burdon and The Animals (the next night in San Diego was billed as the "Farewell" show).Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6667800298422570910.post-77198660143424650312021-09-25T11:03:59.095-07:002021-09-25T11:03:59.095-07:00Its certainly true that historically SB was not a ...Its certainly true that historically SB was not a suburb, until the interurban connected it. A couple c...Corry, I enjoyed your article greatly!

A couple corrections which I am amazed nobody pointed out to you in all this time.

You state: "Like almost all of Southern California, without importing water and having a railroad to export production, the city and county had little chance to thrive. "
While you are right about most of Southern California, San Bernardino is the exception. The SB Mountains provide ample snow melt, and SB rests above an underwater basin known as the Bunker Hill Basin which is the size of Lake Shasta. SB had a history of flooded basements in public buildings like the regional post office, so SB gave away much of its water through pipelines and the Santa Ana River to cities such as Riverside, but SB has more than enough water for itself and surrounding cities. In fact, one of SB's most famous and bombastic mayors, Bob Holcomb, made his reputation on saving SB from being annexed by the LA Metropolitan Water District who wanted to steal SB's water. Holcomb kept us independent. He served as mayor 17 years.

Also, SB's history is not that of an LA suburb. SB was a co-equal of LA in the 19th and most of the 20th Centuries. Most of the cities in the 50 miles between LA and SB did not exist. SB was and is its own independent City, not a suburb.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12191795115779689153noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6667800298422570910.post-30883511654218311772021-05-01T18:25:20.735-07:002021-05-01T18:25:20.735-07:00Jefferson Airplane lineup in 69 at Swing was It...Jefferson Airplane lineup in 69 at Swing was It's a Beautiful Day, Lee Michaels (and Frosty!), Three Dog Night, and JA. The place was an ancient crap hole: small, no ventilation, low roof, flat floor, filthy bathrooms.

Open seating. We got there in time to be about five rows back from the stage. It was summer so it was about 100 degrees inside with no air conditioning. Lots of beer drinking from bottles which later became weapons.

Hendrix was very late and in a bad mood. This was before bands became professional with pro lighting, advanced sound, and an attitude of being a performer. The crowd roared loudly so Hendrix just stood there telling everybody to "shut the fuck up." Didn't happen so the band left the stage. This caused a small riot as people threw beer bottles and garbage at the stage. San Bernardino is home to the Hells Angels and they were there. Looked like the place was going to be destroyed. I figured they'd go backstage and beat Hendrix to death. He had it coming?

You need to consider Hendrix had been on the road for years and doing a new city every night, so he was sick of it all. The promoters likely felt if Hendrix didn't come out the place would be torched and Hendrix killed.

So the band came back on stage. Hendrix simply stated they were sick of playing their hits and they were going to jam.

Then a problem arose. The floor was flat so if anybody stood, the seated people could not see the stage. The people in the first five rows stood up. Everybody behind those rows was seated and angry at the stage being blocked. I was in row six so if I sat the stage was blocked, and it I stood I was getting hit by beer bottles. I asked myself what the hell was I doing there! Finally everybody stood and the band stopped jamming a bunch of unintelligible garbage and played a few hits. Show over. Another show awaited on our exit.

As my buddy and I left the building there were riot police about 100 feet in front of the venue in full riot gear. A cop on a bull horn said this was an illegal gathering and for everybody to leave. They started firing tear gas and people rushed in every direction. My buddy and I got to his motorcycle and we got the hell out of there.
