There was a recording truck parked out front. I remember Eric Andersen, Big Joe Williams...I wasv there to accompany blues singer Mable Hillery. (this is how she spelled her name) We waited and enjoyed company of other performers in the wings. Bukka White was two in front of us, followed by Skip James, who was sitting next to us with his wife. Mable sang two numbers. One was most likely a ragtime "Mama Had a Bowleg Rooster" and the other most likely a slow blues "Tell Me How Long (That Train Been Gone) ". That night at the venue I also
remember Judy Collins (!?), Danny Kalb, Harvey Brooks, backing up several performers as the house bassist, and Al Kooper keeping the show moving along with possibly a clipboard under his arm (?). Sony Terry and Brownie Mc Ghee may have played that night, but I don't remember their performance. However, Mable and I went with McGhee to his Manhattan apartment after we were out of there. He gave me some sound advice about guitar technique and was a wonderful person to spend time with. I accompanied Hillery on several occasions on radio and at festivals but eventually followed McGhee's advice to chronicle rather than perform, and became a documentary film maker and later recorded James "Son" Thomas, Otha Turner, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and others, for films, and for archival purposes. I had not realized it at the time, but McGhee and Mable Hillery were to become a couple. They appear together on the CBC (or CTV?) "Blues Masters" broadcast in several versions available on YouTube. They toured Canada, England, Italy, with Dixon, Perkins, Waters (?), and others including Berry I think, later in 1966. I received long letters from Hillery which I have kept, saying how unbelievably exciting the tour was in terms of audience recognition and response. They were engaged to be married a few years later, but on the eve of their wedding, Mable Hillery died unexpectedly at the age of 47. Howard
turned over/sold the Au Go Go to Richie Havens, in order to go down to Miami and manage Fred Neil. Richie later turned into the New Gaslight
for awhile. A pretty good Doo-Wop group
and my uncle got to hit the last note. A small universe when it comes to music I guess.
Vinnie, NYCUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01573405437697434845noreply@blogger.com
